Your car's main control module is commonly referred to as the ECU (Engine Control Unit) and this controls the vehicle operation by using the programmed software to interpret the data received from the multitude of sensors and secondary control modules operating.

The software on the ECU is referred to as the map. The standard map has various parameters for the different control functions, an example is the parameters for when the turbo boost is activated.

Remapping is effectively reading the original map from the ECU and adjusting it by programming changes to the preset parameters then applying the modified map to the ECU.

You might be wondering why the car manufacturers don't optimise the maps before selling you the car. Its because of the sheer magnitude of how many different models are on sale and how many different countries they are sold in. There are different tax and emission regulations in different places and the manufacturer is limited by the costs involved to provide anything other than a compromised tuning set up that ticks all the boxes in one go.
